As noted here, a large part of MESA’s mission is to encourage students to expand their skills and to view their work in a wider context. With this in mind we regularly organize workshops and seminars, on a range of topics. For previous events, you can see the recordings online here. Note: MESA provides up to $200 of travel allocation to individual MacDiarmid students and postdocs to attend our full-day workshops.
MacDiarmid Institute Student and Post-Doc Symposium:
(28-29 November 2013 – Victoria University of Wellington)
The 9th MacDiarmid Student and Postdoc Symposium will be held at Victoria University of Wellington on the 28th and 29th of November 2013.
The symposium theme this year is ‘Communicating Science – Spread the word!’
Registration opens on Monday the 2nd of September and is open to all students and postdocs whose supervisor is a MacDiarmid Investigator.
We will pay for one night accommodation and meals during the symposium. You will also get a MacDiarmid t-shirt!
As per usual, there will be student presentations.
All students and postdocs, who are not presenting oral contributions, are expected to present a poster or an Up-Goer-Five Challenge.
Please bring a poster that is A1 sized and that clearly describes your research. The posters will be judged according to best presentation.
Up Goer Five Challenge
We are going to run a game where you can use only the ten hundred (1000) most used words to tell other people about what you do, or an idea, or how stuff works. You can enter writing or a picture with writing.
You can enter up to three hundred words. Have a look at http://xkcd.com/1133/ and http://tenhundredwordsofscience.tumblr.com/ to get the idea and then write your own words at http://splasho.com/upgoer5/
