Linux: Ubuntu

Ubuntu

Our current recommended Linux operating system is Ubuntu for new Linux users, although there are others out there which more advanced users may prefer.

Ubuntu is a simple, easy-to-use and free Linux based operating system. It’s open source and is an alternative to either Mac OSX or Windows designed specifically to be usable by anyone. It can replace your current operating system, run side-by-side as a dual boot or run as an internal programme in Windows.

So why bother to switch to Ubuntu (or any Linux based system) when you’re already accustomed to Windows or Mac OSX? Well other than cost, ease of use,the huge online support networks for Ubuntu and the almost complete lack of Linux viruses – for scientists it allows you to dictate EXACTLY how your machine operates so that you are able to get the most out of it. For more reasons check the Ubuntu site here.

You can download the latest desktop version here, and an installer onto an existing Windows operating system here.
