We’re a venture backed team of four looking for an intern to join us at our Wellington-based office for the summer.

You’ll be: building tools to make both pre- and post-publication peer-review better; communicating with authors, reviewers, and journals; and learning how a high growth startup works from the inside.

Callaghan Innovation (Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch)

Getting a better view of the HMV sector in NZ, aiding better understanding of and connecting with the sector.

You’ll be: working to identify active technology platforms/clusters within New Zealand and correlating with market sector and firm profile (size, revenue, spend etc).  You’ll be utilising a pre-existing database held by Callaghan Innovation (comprising about 1500 NZ technology companies) and undertaking a substantive database analysis.  This will require a combination of automated data-base text searching and classification and development of processes to rationalise and identify the clusters.  You’ll get loads of exposure to the NZ-technology companies and also get to spend some time going on site visits to R&D active companies with Callaghan Innovation Investment managers, with the possibility of carrying out interviews with existing Callaghan Innovation clients.

You’ll be working with the Business R&D Grants team at Callaghan Innovation.

Rakon (Auckland)

1. Quartz Resonator manufacture using Photolithography

Rakon has been doing development for a couple of years on manufacturing with Photolithography for 3-dimensional structures in quartz as well as the shaping of the metallic electrode on the surface of the quartz. We have a Lab/small production line Cleanroom facility setup in Auckland and are moving towards our first product release for production in the first half of next year.

Areas for study:

i.     Quartz chemical etching optimisation – Feature definition and anisotropic etching Chemistry – Process Setting – Additives (e.g surfactants)
ii.     Quartz Etching Hard-Mask – Reduced cost with alternative materials to gold

2. Quartz Resonator to Package attachment material

The quartz resonator is assembled into a ceramic package using a silicone conductive adhesive to provide a flexible joint between the two different materials (Quartz – Ceramic). The performance and characteristics of the resonator are very dependent on the effective stresses/strains that are “applied” to the quartz resonator from the adhesive or through the adhesive from the ceramic or external environment. We are interested in effects that are changing the frequency of the resonator in the tens of parts per billion.

Areas for study:

i.     Possible adhesive compositions/types to improve the performance
ii.     Possible alternative bonding/assembly materials/structures to improve performance

These two seem the most likely to fit at the moment but there could be others once we get a better understanding of each other’s focus areas.

F&P Healthcare (Auckland)

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare has provided us with a huge list of projects broadly related to mechanical engineering and materials science. A few representative descriptions are given below (in no particular order):

  • Design a filter with lower pressure drop than conventional systems – investigate materials and structures for application in sleep apnea and infant respirators.
  • Solve problems relating to heating a tub of water quickly and efficiently with minimal losses and cost. Ideally made from a mouldable bio-compatible plastic with high thermal conductivity and high heat deflection temperature.
  • 3D printing: Use Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) for developing, optimising, and prototyping injection mould tools. In more general words, compare additive manufacturing to standard production methods, taking economic aspects and mechanical performance into account.
  • Polymer characterization – Investigate temperature and humidity effects, effect of organic solvents on fatigue properties and stress relaxation of various polymers. The project involves generating data experimentally and developing a mathematical model.
